Last thing before locking the door for the night, some people like to pass a lit bundle through the entryway. This one combines white sage with ruda, the Spanish name for rue, in a 10 cm stick.
Spiritual meaning
Ruda is associated in Mediterranean and Latin American folklore with protection and warding off negative energy, and it is a common addition to sage bundles made in Mexico for that reason. Traditionally, the combination is used to mark a boundary, such as the threshold of a home, rather than for a general room clearing.
How to use
- Angle the stick slightly as you light the tip, then blow out the flame so it smoulders steadily.
- Set it down in a heatproof dish between passes, and press the tip gently against it to stop the smoulder when you are done.
- Always burn it on a heat-resistant surface, never leave it unattended, and keep the room ventilated.
