Reaching for something a little different in the evening, patchouli is one of the most recognisable oils in any collection, loved or disliked but rarely ignored. Steam-distilled from the dried, fermented leaves of Pogostemon cablin in Indonesia, it has a rich, earthy, musky-sweet smell that only grows deeper with age.
Energetic properties
Patchouli leaves were once packed among traded textiles to keep moths away, and the scent became so associated with imported cloth that it later defined a whole era of perfumery. In aromatherapy tradition it is associated with grounding and a settled mood, deepening in scent the longer the bottle is kept.
How to use
- Add a few drops to a diffuser in the evening
- Dilute in a carrier oil before applying to skin, and patch test first
- Not for internal use
- Keep out of reach of children and pets
- Ask a doctor before use in pregnancy
