Settling into a garden chair with a book in the afternoon, lemon verbena is a scent many people already know from herbal tea blends. Steam-distilled from the herb Aloysia triphylla in Spain, its oil carries a sharp, clean, intensely lemony smell far stronger than the leaf.
Energetic properties
Lemon verbena travelled from South America to European gardens in the eighteenth century and quickly became a favourite for its scent alone. In aromatherapy tradition it is associated with a lifted, settled mood, and it makes a bright top note in a citrus or floral diffuser blend.
How to use
- Add a few drops to a diffuser in the afternoon
- Dilute in a carrier oil before applying to skin, and patch test first
- Not for internal use
