Before you sit down, light one. The stick takes a moment to catch, then settles into a slow thread of smoke that gives you something to measure the next twenty minutes by. This is masala incense from the Vedic line, hand-rolled in India and blended for meditation.

Spiritual meaning

Masala incense is made by rolling a paste of resins, herbs and aromatic oils onto a thin bamboo stick, a method used in India for centuries. Burning something fragrant to open a practice is older still: in the Vedic tradition offerings of scent and smoke marked the beginning of a rite and the line between ordinary time and set-apart time. Many people keep the habit for that alone, letting the first breath of smoke stand for the moment they stop doing and start sitting.

How to use

• Light the coated tip, let the flame take, then blow it out so the ember glows.
• Stand the stick in a holder that catches the ash and can take the heat.
• Give the room some air, and keep the smoke away from anyone who finds it heavy.
• Never leave a burning stick unattended, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
