A single decorative letter A, nine centimetres tall and half a centimetre thick, light enough to stand on a shelf or lean against a wall. Letters like this are usually bought one at a time: an initial for a name, a short word spelled out along a mantelpiece, or a quiet mark on a door.
Symbolism
The alphabet has never been only practical. Letters have been used as monograms, house marks and charms for centuries, and an initial standing on its own still reads as a person rather than a sound. A is the first letter of the Greek and Latin alphabets and, as alpha, the traditional sign of a beginning.
