Light a Chandan stick before you sit, and give it a minute before you start. The smoke is soft, woody and dry, the sandalwood character that so many people associate with temple courtyards and long, unhurried practice. It is a quiet fragrance rather than a sweet one, and it holds in a room for a good while after the stick has burned down. Each pack contains 15g of masala sticks made in India.

Spiritual meaning

Chandan is the Hindi word for sandalwood, used in Indian ritual for millennia as paste, powder and incense. It is traditionally associated with purification, devotion and mental clarity, and is offered at shrines and worn as a tilak mark on the forehead. Many people burn it for meditation, mantra practice and prayer, or simply to bring a grounded, contemplative feel to a workspace.

How to use

  • Place one stick in a heat-resistant holder with an ash catcher.
  • Light the tip, let it flame, then gently blow it out so the ember glows.
  • Stand the holder on a stable surface away from curtains, books and flammable items.
  • Keep the room aired while burning and after.
  • Never leave incense unattended; keep out of reach of children and pets.

Ask about this piece

Measurements, materials, how a thing is meant to be used, whether two pieces go together: ask and a person answers. Natural stone and hand-made work vary from piece to piece, so the photograph shows one example rather than the exact item. Write to us.
