When a notebook comes out to work through a change of plans, cypress is one of the steadier oils to have diffusing nearby. Steam-distilled from the needles and twigs of Cupressus sempervirens in Spain, it has a crisp, green, slightly resinous smell reminiscent of a pine forest.
Symbolism
Cypress trees have long marked cemeteries and sacred ground across the Mediterranean, associated since antiquity with endurance and the passage of time. In aromatherapy tradition the oil is linked to steadiness during change, and it is often blended with citrus or juniper for a clean, outdoor-feeling mix.
How to use
- Add a few drops to a diffuser while working through a change or transition
- Dilute in a carrier oil before applying to skin, and patch test first
