Tucked at the back of a home apothecary shelf, oregano is one of the more powerful oils in any collection, not one to reach for casually. Steam-distilled from the leaves and flowers of Origanum vulgare in Spain, it has a sharp, green, camphorous smell, far stronger than the dried culinary herb.
Energetic properties
Oregano has flavoured Mediterranean cooking and folk tradition for centuries, its name rooted in the Greek for "joy of the mountain". In aromatherapy tradition it is associated with strength and resilience, though its intensity means it is generally used in very small amounts within a blend rather than alone.
How to use
- Use only one or two drops at a time in a diffuser
- Dilute thoroughly in a carrier oil before any skin contact, and patch test first
- Not for internal use
- Keep out of reach of children and pets
- Ask a doctor before use in pregnancy
