As dusk settles and the lights go down, myrrh is one of the oldest resins people have burned to mark the close of the day. Steam-distilled from the resin of Commiphora myrrha in Somalia, it has a deep, smoky, slightly bitter-sweet balsamic smell.
Symbolism
Myrrh has been traded since antiquity across the Horn of Africa and Arabia, valued in ancient Egypt for embalming and ceremony and later named among the gifts of the Magi. In aromatherapy tradition it is associated with grounding and quiet reflection, often paired with frankincense in an evening blend.
How to use
- Add a few drops to a diffuser or oil burner in the evening
- Dilute in a carrier oil before applying to skin, and patch test first
- Not for internal use
- Keep out of reach of children and pets
