Molten Glass Bowl on Whitewash Wood - Large

This large bowl sets hand-blown recycled glass onto a piece of Gamal wood finished with a pale whitewash, rather than left in its natural tone. Made in Bali, the lightened wood base gives the piece a softer, more neutral look that pairs easily with light interiors. As with the rest of the range, the glass was melted directly onto the wood while still hot, so it holds the exact shape of that root as it cools.

Symbolism

Balinese artisans describe the fit between glass and wood in pieces like this as a partnership rather than a fixed design: the glass adapts to the wood's shape, not the other way round. Many people see the whitewashed finish as a way of softening that pairing further, letting the grain show through a lighter surface. Because each wood root is different, this large bowl's exact curve and grain belong only to this piece.
