Decorative @ Symbol – Small Alphabet Sign 9 cm

A small decorative character for a shelf, a desk or a wall: the at sign, 9 cm tall, 5.5 cm wide and about half a centimetre thick. It weighs almost nothing, so it leans on a shelf edge or goes up with an adhesive strip, and it still reads clearly from across the room.

Symbolism

The at sign is far older than the inbox it lives in. Merchants and scribes used it for centuries as shorthand for at the rate of, and one popular account traces its looping shape to the amphora, a unit of measure in Mediterranean trade. In 1971 an engineer named Ray Tomlinson borrowed it to separate a person from a machine in the first network mail address, and it has meant presence and being reachable ever since.

How to use

• Lean it on a shelf, a mantelpiece or a stack of books.
• Mount it on a wall with removable adhesive strips: it is light enough for them.
• Group it with other characters to spell a name, a word or an initial.
• Dust with a dry cloth and keep it out of damp rooms.
