Yerba santa, meaning holy herb in Spanish, has long been used by Indigenous peoples of California and is traditionally associated with clarity and blessing. It is generally considered a lighter presence within the wider smudging tradition, distinct from the stronger, more assertive scent of white sage on its own.
How to use
- Light the leafy tip at an angle and let it catch, then blow out the flame so it smoulders and releases smoke.
- Rest it in a heatproof dish or shell and carry it slowly around the room, letting the smoke reach corners and doorways.
- Never leave a burning smudge stick unattended, and keep a window or door open while it burns.
