Whitewash Turtle Carving & Natural Capiz Wind Chime
A turtle carved in a soft whitewash finish sits above a cascade of natural, undyed capiz shell discs in this wind chime. Driftwood, raffia cord and pinewood beads complete the piece, which is handmade in Indonesia and measures approximately 40 x 21 cm.
Symbolism
The turtle is traditionally read as a symbol of steadiness and long life in several cultures, a calm counterpart to the piece's soft, pale colouring. Many people also hang wind chimes near a door or window in the belief that their sound helps clear negative energy from a space and settle the mood of a room.
How to use
- Hang in a calm corner, reading nook or covered garden spot where the breeze can reach it.
- Keep away from constant direct sun and heavy rain, since driftwood and shell are natural materials that can fade or weather over time.
- Handle the shell discs gently when hanging, as they are thin and can chip if knocked.

Ask about this piece
Measurements, materials, how a thing is meant to be used, whether two pieces go together: ask and a person answers. Natural stone and hand-made work vary from piece to piece, so the photograph shows one example rather than the exact item. Write to us.
