This placemat is woven from water hyacinth fibre in the Robusta pattern and finished with a fringed edge. It measures 50 x 35 cm and gives a single plate or bowl a coarser, more open-weave texture.
Symbolism
Water hyacinth is a fast-growing water plant, dried and worked into mats and baskets across Southeast Asia as a practical use for an abundant material. The thicker Robusta weave has a more rustic, tactile feel than the finer patterns in the same range, closer to raw plant fibre in both look and touch.
