Finished in white over carved Albasia wood, this decorative mask takes its form from the traditional tribal masks of Timor, in Indonesia. Measuring 27 x 20 cm, the pale finish lets the carved linework of the face stand out clearly against most wall colours.
Spiritual meaning
On Timor, masks like this were traditionally carved as a tribute to ancestors and protective deities, worn in ceremonial dances by priests, shamans or chosen dancers said to channel the spirit the mask represented while wearing it. Here the form is used purely as a decorative wall piece, inspired by that tradition rather than part of any ceremony.
