Left in its natural, undyed tone, this placemat is woven from seagrass fibre with a fringed edge. It measures 57 x 35 cm, with a thickness of about 1 cm, and suits a single setting of plates and bowls.
Symbolism
Many home traditions connect unbleached, plant-based materials to the earth element and to simplicity at the table. Leaving the seagrass in its own colour, rather than dyeing it, is for some a way of keeping a meal close to its raw, natural materials, a small daily nod to what the table is made from as well as what is served on it.
