Molten Glass Vase on Whitewash Wood - Medium

This medium vase pairs hand-blown recycled glass with a piece of Gamal wood finished in a pale whitewash, made in Bali. Taller than the bowls in this family, it is shaped for cut or dried flowers as much as for display on its own. The glass was melted directly onto the wood while hot, so it holds the precise contour of that particular root.

Symbolism

In this whitewashed line, the lightened wood tone is used to soften the usual contrast between fired glass and grown wood, letting the two sit together more quietly. Many people see this kind of pairing as a small, domestic version of a much older idea: that natural materials can be joined without disguising what each one is. Because the wood root is never repeated, this vase's shape and grain are unique to this piece.
