Molten Glass Mini Decanter on Wood 20cm

Standing around 20 cm tall, this decanter is hand-shaped from molten glass and set on a piece of reclaimed Gamal wood. It is made in Indonesia, where the glass is hand-blown and melted directly over the wood base until it cools into a close, natural fit. The result is a sculptural yet genuinely usable piece, sized for wine, water or simply as a table centrepiece.

Symbolism

Because the glass follows the wood's own form as it cools, small variations and the odd air bubble are part of the process rather than a flaw, and Balinese makers treat them as a mark of handwork. Many people see this willingness to let the material show its own history as a kind of honesty in craft. No two of these decanters share exactly the same base, so each one keeps a slightly different profile.

• Use to serve wine or water, or as a stand-alone centrepiece.
• Suits a dining table, sideboard or drinks tray.
• Hand wash only; wipe the wood with a dry cloth and avoid prolonged contact with standing water.
