Molten Glass Bowl on Wood - Medium

This medium bowl has a notably shallow, wide profile, formed from hand-blown recycled glass melted onto a natural Gamal wood base in Bali. Its low sides make it better suited to a flat display of stones or trinkets than to holding anything upright. The glass settles into the exact shape of the wood beneath it as it cools.

Symbolism

In Balinese craft tradition, a shallow, open form like this is sometimes chosen deliberately to let the wood grain show around most of the bowl's edge, rather than hiding it beneath tall glass sides. Many people see this as giving equal weight to both materials, rather than treating the wood as a mere base. Because the wood root is never repeated, this bowl's outline is unique to this piece.
