Molten Glass Bowl on Whitewash Wood - Medium

Sized between the small and large versions in this range, this medium bowl combines hand-blown recycled glass with a piece of Gamal wood finished in a pale whitewash. Made in Bali, the lightened wood tone gives it a softer look than the natural-finish pieces elsewhere in the collection. The glass was melted directly onto the wood while hot, so it settles into the exact contours of that root as it cools.

Symbolism

Balinese makers see the fit between glass and wood as something the glass adapts to, rather than a shape imposed from outside. Many people find the whitewashed finish brings a calmer, more neutral note to that pairing, letting the grain read through a lighter surface. Because no two wood roots are the same, this bowl's grain and curve are unique to this piece.
