Large Molten Glass Terrarium Vase on Wood

This large terrarium-style vase is formed from hand-blown recycled glass melted directly onto a Gamal wood root. Made in Bali, its wide glass jar sits in a natural wood base shaped by growth rather than by a mould. At over five kilograms, it is one of the heaviest pieces in this range, built as a substantial floor or table feature.

Symbolism

Balinese glassblowers see this kind of piece as a dialogue between two processes: the slow growth of a tree root and the quick transformation of glass under heat. As the molten glass cools over the wood, it takes on the exact contours of that particular root, so no two jars ever match. Many people view this contrast, soft glass settling onto hard, weathered wood, as a small symbol of adaptation and fit.

How to use

• Use as a terrarium for air plants or potted succulents, or for dried arrangements.
• Works equally well as a stand-alone sculptural vase for tall dried branches.
• Wipe the glass with a soft, damp cloth and keep the wood away from standing water.
