Tidying a shelf of home apothecary bottles, hyssop is one of the older, less common herbs to come across. Steam-distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of Hyssopus officinalis, it has a sharp, camphorous, slightly sweet herbal smell distinct from culinary kitchen herbs.
Symbolism
Hyssop has a long history in European herbal and religious tradition, mentioned in ancient texts as a plant used for ritual cleansing. In aromatherapy tradition it is associated with clearing and renewal, though it is one of the stronger oils in a collection and is generally used in smaller amounts than most.
How to use
- Use sparingly in a diffuser, a drop or two at a time
- Dilute well in a carrier oil before any skin contact, and patch test first
