At around 50 cm tall, this is the largest Happy Buddha statue in the collection, hand-carved from a single piece of Suar wood in the traditional Balinese style and finished with a whitewash that softens the natural grain. Its size makes it a strong floor-standing piece for an entrance, living room or covered garden spot.
Symbolism
The smiling, round figure often called a Happy or Laughing Buddha is traditionally linked with contentment and good fortune in folklore, distinct from images of the historical Buddha. Given its size, this piece can take several weeks to carve, and small natural variations or fine cracks are part of the character of a solid hand-carved statue.
