This Happy Buddha statue is hand-carved from a single piece of Suar wood in the traditional Balinese style, standing about 40 cm tall with a whitewash finish over the natural grain. Its scale makes it a strong floor or console piece for an entrance, living room or covered garden corner.
Symbolism
In folklore, the smiling, round figure often called a Happy or Laughing Buddha is traditionally associated with contentment and good fortune, and is a separate tradition from images of the historical Buddha. Carving a piece of this size can take several weeks, and because it is entirely hand-finished, small natural variations and occasional fine cracks are part of its character.
