Dyed Purple Calcite Geode in Black Rock – 8.5 cm

Some mornings you want something in your hand that has an inside. This is a calcite geode of about 8.5 cm: rough dark rock on the surface, opened to show a lining of crystals dyed a deep purple. Put it where you already stop for a moment, a windowsill, a desk, the corner of an altar, and it catches light from across the room.

Spiritual meaning

A geode is a hollow in rock that fills with crystal over a very long time, and most of its symbolism comes from that: what looks plain from the surface holds something else. In crystal lore calcite is associated with clarity and with clearing out what has gone stale, and geodes are often kept as a reminder of what is hidden or unfinished. The purple here is applied colour rather than the natural shade of the stone, so take it as decoration and not as part of the tradition.

Care

• Dust it with a soft, dry brush. The crystal points are brittle and chip if knocked.
• Keep it out of water: the piece contains selenite, which dissolves, and water lifts the applied colour.
• Keep it out of long hours of direct sunlight, which fades the dye.
• To cleanse it, many people use smoke or moonlight rather than water or salt.
