Wintergreen has a sharp, sweet-minty scent that most people recognise from old-style sweets and balms, even before they know the plant itself. This oil is steam distilled from the leaves of a Gaultheria species, a creeping shrub whose oil is naturally high in methyl salicylate.
Energetic properties
In aromatherapy tradition, wintergreen is associated with warmth and relief from heaviness, often blended in small amounts into massage or sports-related oils. Its scent is sweet, minty and unusually penetrating.
How to use
- Use only a drop or two at a time; this oil is highly concentrated
- Always dilute well in a carrier oil before skin contact and patch test first
- Methyl salicylate is toxic in quantity: keep this oil firmly away from children and pets
- The 0.5 kg bottle suits people who blend their own massage oils in quantity
- Do not ingest; ask a doctor before use in pregnancy or alongside any medication
