This decorative wall mask is carved from Albasia wood and finished in black, drawing on the tribal mask tradition of Timor in Indonesia. At 27 x 20 cm it is sized to stand out as a single wall piece, with the dark finish giving strong definition to the carved features.
Spiritual meaning
Traditionally, the tribal masks of Timor were carved as offerings to ancestors and guardian spirits, worn during ceremonial dances by priests, shamans or chosen dancers who were believed to become a channel for the spirit represented. This piece is made purely for decorative display and takes its inspiration from that visual tradition rather than from any ritual use.
