Spanish monks named this wood palo santo, meaning holy wood, after learning of its use among South American communities. Many people burn it to clear a space of stagnant energy, and unlike smudging herbs used only for clearing, Palo Santo is also traditionally associated with inviting a calmer atmosphere once the smoke has settled.
How to use
- Light the tip of a stick and let it catch briefly, then blow out the flame so it smoulders
- Rest it on a heat-resistant dish or holder, never directly on furniture
- Let the smoke drift through the room, then extinguish fully in sand or water before leaving it unattended
- Keep the room ventilated while burning
