First thing in the morning, a couple of drops of Bergamot oil in the diffuser bring a bright, slightly floral citrus scent into the kitchen, the same note that flavours Earl Grey tea. Cold-pressed from the peel of Citrus bergamia grown in Italy, this is the FCF (furanocoumarin-free) version, processed to reduce the compounds that make citrus oils more likely to react with sunlight on skin.

Energetic properties

Bergamot has long been associated with Southern Italy, where it grows almost exclusively around Calabria and gave its name to the original Eau de Cologne. In aromatherapy lore it is often reached for to lift the mood of a room and bring a sense of brightness to a morning or workspace blend, and many people pair it with woody or floral oils for a rounder scent.

How to use

• Diffuse in the morning or blend with woods or florals for a bright top note.
• Even the FCF version should be diluted for skin use, with a patch test first.
• Avoid direct sun or sunbeds on treated skin for the following hours.
