Black sage sits at the deeper, more grounding end of the smudging tradition practised across Mexico and Central America, often linked in folklore with rest and with letting go of what no longer belongs in a space. A bundle of this length is generally reached for when the job at hand is the whole house rather than a single corner.
How to use
- Hold the stick at an angle, light the tip, then blow out any flame so it smoulders rather than burns.
- Use a heatproof dish, shell or tray to catch any ash as you move through the space.
- Do not leave it burning unattended, and air the room out while it smoulders and afterwards.
