After a conversation that leaves the room feeling heavy, this is the kind of moment people reach for a black sage bundle. It is a 10 cm stick you light at one end, letting it smoulder rather than flame, so the smoke can drift slowly through the space.
Energetic properties
Black sage is traditionally burned in Mexican and Central American smudging practice for a deeper, more grounding clearing than white sage is often used for, and it is associated in folk tradition with dream work and rest. Many people choose it for the bedroom or the end of the day rather than first thing in the morning.
How to use
- Angle the stick slightly as you light the tip, then blow out the flame so it smoulders steadily.
- Set it down in a heatproof dish between passes, and press the tip gently against it to stop the smoulder when you are done.
- Always burn it on a heat-resistant surface, never leave it unattended, and keep the room ventilated.
