By the time the afternoon slump sets in at the desk, the bottle many people reach for is basil. Steam-distilled from the flowering herb Ocimum basilicum in India, it has a bright, green, slightly peppery smell that is instantly recognisable from the kitchen garden.
Energetic properties
Basil has long held a place in home and temple alike, from the tulsi plants kept in Indian households to the bunches hung in Mediterranean kitchens for good fortune. In aromatherapy tradition the oil is associated with mental clarity and renewed focus, and many people diffuse it when concentration is wearing thin.
How to use
- Diffuse a few drops during work or study
- Blend into a carrier oil before applying to skin, and patch test first
