Sage is one of the oldest cleansing plants in ritual use, burned across Europe, the Mediterranean and the Americas to clear stale atmospheres before prayer or ceremony. In folk tradition it is associated with fresh starts, protection of the home and clear thinking, and many people carry a lit stick slowly through a room, corner by corner, when they want to mark a change.
How to use
- Place one stick in a heat-resistant holder with a tray for the ash.
- Light the tip, let it flame for a moment, then blow it out so it smoulders.
- Rest the holder on a stable surface, away from curtains and anything flammable.
- Keep windows open so the smoke can move through and out.
- Never leave it burning unattended, and keep away from children and pets.
