Incense has been offered in Indian temples and home shrines for centuries as a way of honouring the divine and marking sacred time. Fragrances in the Buddha style are traditionally associated with stillness, devotion and a settled mind, and many people burn them at the opening of meditation, yoga or prayer so that the scent itself becomes a cue to slow down.
How to use
- Place one stick in a holder that catches the ash and is resistant to heat.
- Light the coated tip, let the flame catch, then gently blow it out so the ember glows.
- Stand the holder on a stable surface, away from curtains, paper and anything that can catch fire.
- Air the room during and after burning, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
- Never leave a burning stick unattended, and let the ash cool fully before you clear it away.
