Coupe en verre fondu craquelé sur bois

This bowl is made from crackled molten glass, hand-blown and then relaxed over a natural Gamal wood root while still warm. The fine network of surface cracks catches the light differently across the bowl, adding texture to the otherwise smooth curve of the glass. As with the rest of the range, the glass hardens directly onto the wood, so the two materials fit together without any fixings.

Symbolism

Balinese craftspeople describe this process as letting fire-worked glass settle onto slow-grown wood, a pairing many people read as a small symbol of balance between two very different kinds of nature. The crackled surface adds a visible record of the heat and cooling the glass went through, a texture some collectors specifically look for in hand-blown glassware. Because the wood root is never repeated, this bowl's shape and grain are unique to this one piece.

How to use

• Use as a display bowl for stones, air plants or dried botanicals.
