This kalimba is made from a carved coconut shell fitted with seven steel keys, giving it a warm, resonant tone when the keys are plucked with the thumbs. The antique-finish carving on the shell adds decorative detail to what is also a fully playable instrument.
Symbolism
Also known as a thumb piano, the kalimba has roots in African instrument-making traditions and is valued for its simple, meditative sound. In many wellness and mindfulness practices it is used as an easy entry point into intuitive music-making, requiring no formal training.
