Later fractions of the ylang ylang distillation are heavier and less floral than the first, and Grade III is the one most often chosen when a woody, less delicate version of the scent is wanted. This oil comes from the same tree as the higher grades, Cananga odorata, collected later in the same distillation run.
Symbolism
Ylang ylang carries the same tropical, celebratory associations across its grades, though Grade III leans more green and woody than the sweeter, more floral Grade I. Many people choose it for soap-making or blends where a lighter cost matters more than the finest floral note.
How to use
- Add a small amount to a diffuser or soap-making blend
- Dilute in a carrier oil before skin contact and patch test on a small area first
