Symbolism
In Indigenous North American tradition, sweetgrass is generally burned after sage, associated with inviting in positive energy once a space has been cleared rather than with the clearing itself. Combined into a single bundle here, the two together are traditionally used for that fuller sequence, clearing followed by an invitation.
How to use
- Light the leafy tip at an angle and let it catch, then blow out the flame so it smoulders and releases smoke.
- Rest it in a heatproof dish or shell and carry it slowly around the room, letting the smoke reach corners and doorways.
- Never leave a burning smudge stick unattended, and keep a window or door open while it burns.
