In the early evening, light a large Palo Santo incense stick scented with rue to mark the close of the day. Set it in a room you want to settle, and let the smoke build slowly while you finish any last tasks before resting.
Spiritual meaning
Palo Santo, meaning holy wood, comes from a tree native to South America, where it has long been burned to clear a space and mark a change in activity. Rue, known locally as ruda, has a long history in South American folk tradition as a plant burned alongside Palo Santo for cleansing rituals, and the two are often paired together.
How to use
- Light the tip and let a flame catch briefly
- Blow it out gently so it smoulders and smokes
- Place in a heatproof holder away from curtains and other flammable items
- Never leave burning incense unattended and ventilate the room
- Keep out of reach of children and pets
